SOLVANG, Calif. n Oregon State finished with one of the best men’s golf scores in school history on Tuesday as the Beavers took another step toward qualifying for the postseason and finished in fourth-place at the Ogio-Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.
The Beavers shot a 7-under 281 at the Alisal River Course during the final round. OSU finished with a 22-under 842 (285-276-281). The 22-under is the second-best team score relative to par in school history, trailing only a 26-under that won the Northwest Collegiate Classic in fall 2004.
While OSU’s 281 was one of the best scores of the day, the Beavers started the day in fourth place and were unable to make up any ground. OSU finished 15 shots behind champion Cal Poly, 10 strokes behind Denver and two strokes behind UC Irvine.
“We feel good about how we played,” coach Brian Watts said. “Other than our first-round putting woes, we played solid the entire tournament. We just needed a few more putts to fall. Our guys battled and fought hard. They knew every shot would be important. We got off to a slow start, but stayed patient and made some birdies coming in.”
Alex Williams had his best finish of the season, a 7-under 209 and a tie for 13th place.
Diego Velasquez and Vincent Johnson had OSU’s best rounds, both shooting 3-under 69s. For both, it was their second consecutive 69. Velasquez tied for 17th place with a 6-under 210 (72-69-69) and Johnson tied for 22nd place with a 5-under 211 (73-69-69).
Of OSU’s 15 individual rounds during the tournament, nine were under par and another three were even-par.
The Beavers play at the U.S. Intercollegiate, hosted by Stanford, on April 13-14.
